For many years, Allied has been a leader of the Going Green initiative among national printing companies. We always act responsibly to help protect and enhance the environment both locally and globally. Allied’s green energy efforts have been recognized by the People’s Action for Clean Energy, who honored us with a Business Leadership Award. Our eco-friendly policy is firmly tied to our practice of reducing the negative impact on the environment while conserving natural resources.
We are now certified in ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, the most respected international standard for environmental management around the globe. This certification is a set of processes and practices that enable an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. The guiding principle “reduce, reuse, recycle” drives continuous improvement, a hallmark of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
We’re constantly recycling:
Pressroom and Bindery waste
Cardboard (chipboard and corrugated)
Plastics (packaging, skid-wrap and shrink-wrap film)
Laminated paper
Aluminum (printing plates and scrap metal)
Press wash and chemicals (daily)
Virgin white and mixed paper
Our comprehensive recycling program is so broad that when we’re through with something, there isn’t much left to discard.
We don't stop there:
Our new 700kW onsite fuel cell converts natural gas fuel and air into electricity through an electrochemical process without combustion at the highest efficiency of any power solution available in the world today. Combined with our rooftop solar array, one of the largest in Connecticut, we generate up to 85% of our own electricity for our 24/7 facility.
Allied is compliant with all federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.
We’re continually working to reduce our carbon footprint. It’s currently near zero.
Our plant filtration system provides the interior environment with paper powder-free and dust-free air.
We replaced all company-wide lighting, both internally and externally, with LED lights which use one-quarter the energy consumption of fluorescent lighting and is a cleaner form of energy.
We host employee-related recycling programs for paper, plastic bottles and cans.
We put wind to good use. Approximately 15% of the energy used in our facility is generated by wind power.
We harness the power of the sun:
Since June 2015, the 4,540 solar panels on our rooftop (one of the largest arrays in the state of Connecticut) have generated 12% of our facility’s energy, 85% of which was consumed directly on-site and 15% of which was exported to the grid. The annual environmental benefits of this clean energy creation are equivalent to:
Enough electricity to power 153 average homes
Power for 29,000 60-watt light bulbs for 3 hours per day
We have powerful environmental partners:
We’re proud to be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC-C012441). And we're honored to be an EPA Green Power partner.
We print with “green” ink:
Allied only uses vegetable and soy-based inks.
