With over 75 years in the business, Allied has seen many opportunities to make mailing more successful. Our expertise attracts clients who trust us to ensure smooth, efficient mailings. With the help of our in-house USPS Professionals, we’ve compiled a list of ten tips that will help make your mailing experience better.
1. Consult with a Mailpiece Design Professional (MDP)
Mailing design is subject to strict USPS guidelines for all products and service classes. Having a MDP review your design before finalizing ensures it meets these requirements. Allied has an in-house MDP ready to provide recommendations or corrections.
2. Correct Folding for Self-Mailers
Even the simplest folded self-mailers must meet USPS tabbing and mailing requirements. An MDP can guide your folded design to avoid rejection.
3. Sufficient Space for the Mailing Address
Designs must allocate a minimum 4” x 2” area for the address and necessary USPS codings. Failing to do so can delay processing.
4. Using the Right Permit/Indicia
Ensure the correct mailing class, city/state, and permit number are displayed on your postal indicia to avoid issues with acceptance.
5. Dark Backgrounds Won’t Be Processed Early
Dark-colored backgrounds reduce contrast, making it difficult for postal processing equipment to read addresses and barcodes. Check with a Mailpiece Design Analyst (MDA) before printing.
6. Clean Your Mail List
Duplicate, incomplete, or incorrect addresses lead to wasted materials and delays. Ask Allied to “clean” (NCOA/CASS) your list ahead of time to ensure timely delivery of proper amount of mail pieces.
7. Don’t overlook Commingle and Co-Mail Options
Save on postage by leveraging Commingle (for letters) and Co-mail (for flats) services. Be sure to consult early, as Co-mail has strict design requirements for the mail panel area.
8. Take Advantage of USPS Promotions
Take advantage of USPS promotions, which can save up to 6% on postage. These promotions run throughout the year and participation is free.
9. Use Informed Delivery
Informed Delivery is a free USPS service that enhances customer engagement by integrating direct mail with digital marketing. It increases visibility and connects with recipients on multiple channels. Ask your Allied Rep for additional information.
10. Contact a professional.
Allied is the expert in print and mailing. Utilize your resources when and where you can when mailing.
